The Story of The Perth Blues Club so far... Print E-mail

"History is a pack of lies about events that never happened told by people who weren't there."(George Santayana)

We have decided it's time we got the history of the Perth Blues Club down on record but quickly found, as Oscar Wilde once noted, any fool can make history but it takes a genius to write it down. Although the Club is rich in history and musical genius we are definitely light on in the literary genius department. We feel the best way to overcome this problem is to make this an on-line collaborative effort in which anybody who wants to can have a go at making their contribution to the Club history.

Below is a brief outline of some major events and people who played a part in the Club's history. It's an outline or skeleton that needs some flesh put on it and we invite YOU to assist in that process.
Here's how you can help:

  • Read the outline below and if you see errors or know more about the detail of an event or personality write it down and send it to us. Don't worry too much about grammar or style (unless you enjoy working on such things - as many writers do) but try and give us a ‘feel' for what it was like to be there or to know the character of the many individuals who have played a role in the Club history. For instance, you will note we have carefully avoided revealing the secret of Club President Rick Steele's charisma - we want you to do that for us.
  • Think about things you consider unique or special about the Club - particularly things we have missed in our outline- and send us your thoughts. Remember ‘history is merely gossip well told' and we are interested in hearing about everything from your ‘Best ever gig at the Blues Club' to a description of standing outside the Charles on a winter's evening during the interval sharing a smoke with a complete stranger you met at the bar.
  • If you don't know much or anything about the Club but you are into the Blues we would like to hear from you too. Why are the Blues so popular in Australia? What is their relevance to modern Australia? Do not worry about theory we just want to know what you think and feel.

They say the one duty we all have to history is to rewrite it, so go put on one of your favourite Blues tracks, pour a glass of something relaxing, sit back, reflect, then hit those keyboards. Unless requested, we will acknowledge the author of all contributions posted to the site.

Blues Quotes

“I think I made my mark playing instruments like the Minimoog, because I learnt how to make them talk; I learnt how to get the blues out of them.”
