In my job as soundman I get to see nearly all of the local talent eventually.
This includes internationally happening stringmeisters like Dave Hole, Vdelli, and a current wave of excellent Perth bands like Gyroscope, Schvendes, Eskimo Joe, End of Fashion, and Little Birdy.
Besides them, there are many great musos without a big profile, who still manage to make spellbinding music. Anything with my two favourite drummers in it for a start (FYI these two are Angus Diggs, who is currently Mia Dyson's drummer and used to be with Jeff Lang, and Yugon Chobanoff, from the Vibrolators, the Electromen and a load of other good bands).
Last night, like many others at the Blues Club, was another night of undiscovered talent.
The Seven Storey Jumpers, led by Kevin Smith, have a full, dark and broody Southern Rock/Alt Country sound; but the shining highlight for me was the talent of guitar p_layer_ Gary Shuttleworth, an amazing fluid p_layer_ with the best Strat lead sound I've ever heard. Gary (who also plays in Wayne Green and the Phantoms) has great musical judgement in what to play where, is dynamic, tasteful and plays singing guitar lines full of fire!
Last band of the night the Lovebites, led by Phil Bennett on keys, possess the spirit of a great rock'n'roll band. Lovebites always draw the audience closer by being in the moment, while playing great grooves, leaving a dance floor full of mad dancing punters asking for more.
The Perth Blues Club has now been giving bands like this a venue every Tuesday night for 15 years, an amazing record, may there be many more!
Rik the soundman at the Perth Blues and the Fremantle Fly by Night Club.
