Kevin Smith been writing songs in his lounge room for an audience of none for many years. He started out as a drummer and never considered himself a singer and most definitely not a front man. A few years back a mate of his, Richard Woollett, asked him to submit some lyrics for the upcoming Bayou Brothers release, three of those tunes surfaced on the album Baptised in the Blues. Aside from once buying a piece of battered fish that looked remarkably similar to a map of Australia, seeing his name on a CD was a highlight of his life and thought it was time to take this hobby a little more seriously. Richard continued to record Kevin's songs and songs they had written together. The result was a nomination in the 2005 WAMI songwriting awards in the Country category and a win in the Blues/Roots category. Though neither were actually sung by Kevin, the prize money allowed him to get himself a decent left-handed guitar. Somewhere in the mix, Kevin was fortunate enough to meet a bunch of blokes collectively known as The Kill Devil Hills. Their encouragement to pursue not only his songwriting but to sing and perform as well, was the catalyst for what has been quite a surreal 12 months. "Without the Devils, I would not be doing what I'm doing and early on the invitation from Brendon to sit in with the guys and have a play was a turning point for me and partying and drinking and singing songs until dawn with those bearded hillbillies is without doubt a favourite pastime of mine", says Kevin.
Lovebites features Phil Bennett - vocals, piano, on-stage arrangements. Phil has appeared on 24 albums and graced most stages in WA, both past and present. Chart success throughout Europe and Australia and a host of WA Rock Award nominations has led him to receive the Australia Day Award in 1993 for achievement in music. William Halhed - bass, backing vocals. Quiet and almost unnoticeable on stage, William plays the role of Phil's soul brother to perfection, being as reliable and integral to the Love bites sound as his relaxed demeanour suggests. Kevin Rooney - drums. After an absence of over ten years, Phil jumped at the chance to work with his former Helicopters bantam on his return from the UK. With his imagination and sheer class, Kevin slotted in perfectly to provide a solid rhythmic groove whilst adding his own unique flavour to the band's sound. Sam Musca - slide guitar ala Ry Cooder or the raunch and roll of a local Keith Richards, take your pick. Sam's the man. Coming soon:
