The Shinkickers were a headline performance on Tuesday night, and their set was quite interesting. Leading the band was Paul Daly on vocals and harmonica, then Gerry Quigley on lead guitar, Jerry Pugh on keyboards, Roy Daniel on bass and Ace Follington on drums. Although they were obviously a talented bunch of musicians, their first few songs' levels were just a tad too high, and the music became slightly distorted. This was especially apparent in the first song, where it seemed everyone was soloing at once - which may have sounded great if it wasn't for the slight distortion. Some fantastic church organ was contributed in the second song, which really got the tune going. Again, all the instruments seemed to be doing their own thing, but there were many appreciative heads nodding enthusiastically in the audience. Once the lead guitar's levels were turned down a bit, the songs were allowed to be a lot more melodic and some nice vocals and harmonica were contributed by Paul Daly. The tinkering piano provided a great background to the tunes, and it seemed the band relaxed into their set a few songs in. Lead guitar took centre stage, and Quigley proved his talent with his fingers. The keyboard and bass were playing a great riff in the background, although it was hard to hear them over the lead guitar. Quigley replaced his guitar with an electric mandolin, and played some solos that almost sounded like he was playing the fiddle, Devil Went to Georgia style. A lot of instrumentals followed, and the band ended on a 10-minute guitar solo by Quigley.
The next band to take the stage was Lovebites,
and they were fantastic. A couple of Rolling Stones and Iggy Pop covers
certainly hit the spot, and their variance between melancholy tunes and upbeat
melodies provided some great incentive for the audience to stay very
interested. The Lovebites definitely had fun on stage, and although the lead vocalist Phil Bennett was glued to his keyboard much of the time, it didn't stop his stage presence from being obvious. A highlight was when Bennett ad libbed the lyrics from Iggy Pop's I Am A Passenger to gripe about the low wages and high prices in Perth. The Lovebites were a great band to end on - a very talented group of musicians. |
