Mishy Athif

Born March 11th 1993, Fathimath Mishya Athif (Mishy Athif) began singing at the age of 3, participating in the Maldivian Inter-School Singing Competitions during her school years. Encouraged by her dad (former musician, Ahmed Athif), she taught herself the guitar at age 10, which in turn aided her during performances and also helped her compose as she began writing original songs (both in English and her first language) soon after.

Later, Mishy began appearing in small acoustic concerts in 2006, alongside local bands. She first performed solo for the Maldivian public at the Annual National Body-boarding Contest, Varunulaa Challenge in 2006 and was the youngest among only a handful of girls who played the guitar in Maldives at the time. She grew popular among musicians in Maldives and made her official debut into the Maldivian music scene with the major hit, “Fari Paree”(2008). The song was recorded at a live concert with popular music band “Fasylive” and went on to top recognised television and radio charts as a result of gaining popularity on YouTube.

She then went on to appear on countless radio and television shows and created a facebook page in January 2009. Her following on social media flourished as she commenced to upload cover videos which were recorded during resort performances. In 2010, while attending a dinner for “Boney M” member Marcia Barrett, Mishy seized the opportunity to welcome the band to the Maldives by singing them an impromptu unplugged version of Whitney Houston’s “Saving All My Love”. This lead her to be invited by Marcia Barrett to perform at her concert which was held in Male’ the next day. Furthermore, she had a hit with a song called “Hiy kudhi kudhi”, for which she wrote the melody and helped produce the music. It was performed live as a guest performance at the grand finale of “The Voice of Maldives” in 2011, becoming an instant hit on YouTube and validating her creative choice with over 100,000 hits.

Mishy has also performed for four of the Maldivian presidents’ over various occasions, the latest of which was at the Maldivian President’s banquet 2015, where the president of Sri Lanka was also in attendance. Her most notable performance was opening for South Asian sensation “Atif Aslam” at the Visit Maldives Festival Kickoff 2016 on new year’s eve.

Now, Mishy is studying marketing and advertising at Curtin University in Perth and also performing solo around Perth as well as guesting with various bands.
