Cross Eyed Cats

The Cross Eyed Cats were originally formed in 2002 when Glenn Carpenter (guitar and vocals) and Paul FitzPatrick (harmonica) were teaching at a local high school. Together with another teacher from the school, Paul Warner, they began jamming whenever they could. They soon teamed up with mutual friend Duncan Roylance and recruited a young ex-student Matt Cantrell to come and play blues with the old fellas. And so The Cross Eyed Cats were born.

Early live performances included regular shows at the Davilak Hotel in Fremantle and Clancy's Fish Pub in Subiaco, along with occasional gigs at other venues including The Perth Blues Club, West Coast Blues Club and The Fly By Night Club.

After an eighteen month residence at the Davilak and a four month residence at Clancy's, the band was forced into an enforced layoff when work commitments and travel sent some members to various parts of the state. They are now back together.

Glenn Carpenter (guitar and vocals) is a music teacher at a local high school. Originally from Victoria, he has lived in Fremantle for the past five years. Glenn has played in numerous bands over the last fifteen years, including notorious Melbourne seminal Oz rock satirists Black Rose. As well as being the guitarist and singer in the The Cross Eyed Cats, Glenn also writes the majority of the band's original songs.

Duncan Roylance (bass) is the travelling member of the band coming all the way from North Perth our Fremantle base to rehearse and play! He was a foundation member of local band Big Boss Beaver who won the WAMI Blues Song of the Year in 2000. As well as being a Cross Eyed Cat Duncan currently plays double bass in The Heidi Lake Trio, is in indi-pop band The High Ponies as well as doing regular pit work at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. Duncan also writes original songs that the band performs.

Matt Cantrell (drums) is an ex-student of Glenn's who accepted the invitation to join the band at its inception. Also from the Femantle area, he has played in a variety of musical contexts including concert bands, big band jazz ensembles and rock bands. While Matt is comfortable playing in any musical genre, the Cross Eyed Cats has been his first foray into the world of blues. His playing suggests it's where he belongs.

Paul FitzPatrick (harmonica), another Fremantle local, has played mainly in a guitar/harmonica duo prior to the formation of The Cross Eyed Cats.
