As part of Labor’s Soundtrack Australia Music Policy, Tony Burke, Shadow Minister for the Arts, this week announced that if elected, a Shorten Labor Government will commit $1 million to the City of Fremantle and $1 million to the City of Vincent to establish music hubs. The proposed hubs will provide a central place where students and musicians can come, learn, collaborate and practice, with each one set to offer rehearsal space, soundproof studios, instruments, and equipment. The Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition is one of the world’s most prestigious songwriting competitions. It aims to support talented songwriters while raising much-needed funds for not-for-profit organisation Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia (NRMTA). WAM Member and Perth artist Aminah Hughes has been nominated in the Independent Music Awards for her song ‘Tell Me It’s Over’. Recorded in Nashville, Ireland and Perth, ‘Tell Me It’s Over’ features US Gospel singers the McCrary Sisters and is one of 11 songs featured on Aminah’s debut studio album, Blue Wooden Boat. The 2019 editions of WAMFest, WAMCon, and the WAMAwards are looking to build on last year’s successful events and make them even better!The annual celebration of West Australian music is back with WAMFest, WAMCon, and WAMAwards dates locked in for 2019. The festivities will kick off with a regional edition of WAMFest taking place in October. WAM and APRA AMCOS, in collaboration with Tjuma Pulka Aboriginal Media Corporation, are bringing the successful Starting Ground workshop for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians to WA for the first time. The free two-day workshop will take place 30 April – 1 May at Tjuma Pulka in Kalgoorlie.
